Olson Kundig's pavilion home in the meadow-and-wetland landscape north of Seattle.

The detail worth studying here is the clerestory — the band of windows running the perimeter of the main pavilion at ceiling height. In the Pacific Northwest, where the sky is overcast nine months of the year, daylight is a precious resource and clerestories are the unsung infrastructure that bring it deep into a building. Most production homes skip them because they cost more to detail and waterproof. The result is rooms that feel dim regardless of how many fixtures you add. This pavilion shows what happens when daylight is treated as a building material rather than an afterthought.
